Thrift Shop Discovery

In 2007, John Maloof, a history enthusiast, was working on a book about Portage Park, a neighborhood in Chicago.  While at an auction house, he bid on a box of old negatives, hoping to find some photographs for the book.  The negatives turned out to be the work of Vivian Maier, a Chicago care giver and amateur photographer. A body of incredible work that had been created in secret and stashed away in a storage locker has since been made public.

Ms. Maier began her documentation of urban America in New York in 1951, but by 1956, she moved to Chicago where she earned her living as a nanny as she continued to shoot photos of city life.  To learn more, go HERE.
